If you live in Brooklyn's 57th District, Write-In Metz

Mon Nov 01, 2004 at 07:41:28 AM PDT

I think there may be a fair number of Brooklyn Kossites out there. For those of you who are registered in the 57th Assembly District, I urge you to vote, by write in, for Susan Metz.

Susan Metz is running against the indicted incumbent Roger Green. Roger Green was indicted, and under the pressure of having an Assembly ethics report released, resigned on June 1st. The next day he announced he would be running again. That ethics report has never been released.

The number one issue in this district is the 17 high-rise and basketball arena development proposed by Forest City Ratner.

Roger Green supports this project, while a majority of the district opposes it. The approval process for this proposed development is corrupt and stinks to high heaven. Bruce Ratner, the CEO of Forest City Ratner, is Gov. Pataki's old law school buddy. Mr. Pataki is doing all he can to roll out the red carpet for the development that would use enormous taxpayer subsidies, displace hundreds of residents through the abuse of eminent domain, and would create an environmental and traffic nightmare.

Josh Marshall Has A Very Good Idea

Josh Marshall at TPM:

A thought.

I understand that George Soros is a rather wealthy man. Perhaps he should announce that he is interested in buying 90 minutes of prime time air time on Sinclair Broadcasting to show either Fahrenheit 9/11 or, even more appropriately, Going Upriver, the new movie out about John Kerry during the Vietnam era.

The Circus in Albany

Here is a wonderful example why the NY State Legislature is perhaps the worst in the country. From The Times

Silver's Call to Override Pataki on Budget Vetoes Collapses
By AL BAKER

Published: September 21, 2004

ALBANY, Sept. 20 - Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver called his members back to Albany on Monday intending to embarrass Gov. George E. Pataki by overriding many of his vetoes of the state budget.

After a dizzying day of political arm-twisting, though, he was embarrassed himself when he was unable to summon the required number of votes from his own majority party.

Zogby's Notes

Sun Sep 19, 2004 at 11:06:22 PM PDT

Pollster John Zogby: "While the overall numbers remain unchanged, there are some revealing cross-tabulations. Kerry continues to lead on four of five top issues but some possible worrisome details. Among those who say the economy is the top issue, Kerry now leads only 49% to 43%. He maintains wide leads among those who cite the war in Iraq as top issue (55% to 37%), those who cite health care (56% to 32%), and those who cite education (53% to 36%). But the President has widened his advantage over those who cite the war on terrorism to a 56 point lead -- 75% to 19%. This is still very close but has Kerry stopped the bleeding?

So, the campaign must spend October dismantling Bush's "war on terrorism."

The Protests

Wed Sep 01, 2004 at 10:27:23 PM PDT

I think the protests are important for mainly two reasons:

  1. To show the world that there is majority "dissent" in the U.S.

  2. To further energize the base to work harder to remove Bush and turn back his agenda.

And in NY this week we've had significant dissent and protest. Actually very substantial protest, far beyond 1968 if we guage it by arrests and unified message.

Yet apprently this is not all that newsworthy for our pundits. And they lie to explain why they are not granting much coverage at all to the dissent, and taking it seriously:

"It is almost easier to explain what you are not getting here," said Ted Koppel, anchor and managing editor of ABC's "Nightline," when he was asked why news organizations have given little time to the protests. "What you are not getting here is a replay of 1968 in Chicago."

Ted, is right, its not 1968. its 2004 and the stakes are higher than ever. But on what basis does he draw his conclusion?

Reason for RNC in NYC

Sun Aug 29, 2004 at 10:44:11 PM PDT

Has this been discussed?

GOP chose NYC for the Convention because they knew the protests would be massive wherever the Convention would be held. But in NYC they could just spin it and blame it on the "out of the mainstream" radicals of New York City. Whereas most other cities would provide as good an excuse.

Intelligence Waits Til After Election

Wed Jul 14, 2004 at 07:52:29 PM PDT

Ok. I'm not that bright or savvy, but it seems to me that THE outrage of all the outrages is that the Senate Intelligence Committee will wait until AFTER the election to examine what the PrezNut did with his intelligence.

Now, I imagine this discussion has gone on all over DKos, but I've missed it. So please ignore me if this is beating a dead horse. If not, please indulge me.

Why aren't the Dems, especially those two guys at the top of the ticket, calling for this investigation to take place pronto? Why does there seem to be total agreement on this postponment?

Please explain, I'm not that bright or savvy.

With all of the spoofing of Bush out there, what is THIS about?

Secret Service Investigates Teen's Art Project Depicting Bush As Devil

PROSSER, Wash. -- One drawing showed President Bush's head on a stick. Another depicted Bush as a devil launching a missile.

The drawings by a 15-year-old boy in Prosser, Washington, were enough to prompt some questions from the Secret Service.

Agents questioned the teen after being called by police. The boy's art teacher told school officials about the drawings, and they called police.

The boy was not arrested but the school district has taken disciplinary action.

Please Help Me Find "Dean Scream" ReMix

Sat Apr 24, 2004 at 08:38:05 AM PDT

I badly need inspiration and cannot find that awesome Dean Scream remix, I can't find mine, can't remember what its called or where it is. Anyone know the one I mean? If so, an URL would be greatly appreciated.

its the one that, at least to me, was very moving, with a somewhat cheesy techno beat, but still very moving:
"I believe in an America that...and I believe in an America that... etc."

Mr. Okrent, The Times and Mr. Ratner

Mon Apr 12, 2004 at 08:52:45 AM PDT

I sent the following to Stephne Rendall of FAIR, he is looking into it:

April 1, 2004

Dear Mr. Rendall

Develop-Don't Destroy (BROOKLYN) and many others have been severely dismayed by the New York Times' coverage of the Bruce Ratner (Forest City Ratner) so called Atlantic Yards Proposal.

A little background:
Real estate developer Bruce Ratner plans to build a sports arena and 17 housing and commercial high-rises in residential Brooklyn (Atlantic Yards Development Proposal). More than half of his 24-acre proposal is presently occupied by private homes and businesses, property which Mr. Ratner does not own. For his proposal to proceed, Mr. Ratner will ask the Empire State Development Corporation (ESDC), or the City of New York, to use the awesome governmental power of eminent domain to condemn and seize this private property on his behalf.

9/11 Commission Deadline Extended

Wed Feb 04, 2004 at 09:03:33 PM PDT

This is not only good news because its clearly the only right thing to do. But due to public and party pressure, especially, I'd like to hope, pressure from the remarkable 9/11 Wives, we have won this skirmish. We being Americans first and Dems second.

Now, will the WH, NYC and all the other agencies start cooperating more readily? We'll see.

Kerry's Special Interests

Wed Feb 04, 2004 at 08:08:52 PM PDT

How much more of this kind of shit is going to come out?
AP Exclusive: Kerry Blocked Law, Drew Cash

By JOHN SOLOMON, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - A Senate colleague was trying to close a loophole that allowed a major insurer to divert millions of federal dollars from the nation's most expensive construction project. John Kerry (news - web sites) stepped in and blocked the legislation.

Over the next two years, the insurer, American International Group, paid Kerry's way on a trip to Vermont and donated at least $30,000 to a tax-exempt group Kerry used to set up his presidential campaign. Company executives donated $18,000 to his Senate and presidential campaigns.

Were the two connected? Kerry says not.

But to some government watchdogs, the tale of the Massachusetts senator's 2000 intervention, detailed in documents obtained by The Associated Press, is a textbook case of the special interest politicking that Kerry rails against on the presidential trail.

"The idea that Kerry has not helped or benefited from a specific special interest, which he has said, is utterly absurd," said Charles Lewis, head of the Center for Public Integrity that just published a book on political donations to the presidential candidates.

"Anyone who gets millions of dollars over time, and thousands of dollars from specific donors, knows there's a symbiotic relationship. He needs the donors' money. The donors need favors. Welcome to Washington. That is how it works."

The documents obtained by AP provide a window into Kerry's involvement in a two-decade-old highway and tunnel construction project in his home state of Massachusetts. Known as the "Big Dig," it had become infamous for its multibillion dollar cost overruns.

Kerry's office confirmed Wednesday that as member of the Senate Commerce Committee he persuaded committee chairman John McCain, R-Ariz., to drop a provision that would have stripped $150 million from the project and ended the insurance funding loophole.

The Massachusetts Democrat actually was angered by the loophole but didn't want money stripped from the project because it would hurt his constituents who needed the Boston project finished, spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter said.

When the "AIG investment scheme (came) to light, John Kerry called for public hearings to investigate the parties involved and the legality of the investment practices. However, he firmly believed cutting funding for the Big Dig was not the answer," Cutter said.

Instead of McCain's bluntly worded legislation, Kerry asked for a committee hearing in May 2000. Kerry thanked McCain at the start of the hearing for dropping his legislation and an AIG executive was permitted to testify that he believed the company's work for the Big Dig was a good thing even though it was criticized by federal auditors.

"From the perspective of public and worker safety and cost control, AIG's insurance program has been a success," AIG executive Richard Thomas testified.

Asked why Kerry would subsequently accept a trip and money from AIG in 2001 and 2002 if he was angered by the investment scheme, Cutter replied: "Any contributions AIG made to the senator's campaign came years after the investigation. Throughout his career, John Kerry has stood up to special interests on behalf of average Americans. This case is no different."

The New York-based insurer, one of the world's largest, declined to comment on its donations to Kerry, simply stating, "AIG never requested any assistance from Senator Kerry concerning the insurance we provided the Big Dig."

The project has become a symbol of government contracting gone awry, known for its huge cost overruns that now total several billion dollars, and its admissions of mismanagement.

During the 1990s, Sens. Kerry and Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., helped win new federal funding for the project as its costs skyrocketed and threatened to burden the state's government. In 1998, Kerry was credited with winning $100 million in new federal funding.

But in 1999, the Transportation Department uncovered a financing scheme in which the project had overpaid $129.8 million to AIG for worker compensation and liability insurance that wasn't needed, then had allowed the insurer to keep the money in a trust and invest it in the market. The government alleged AIG kept about half of the profits it made from the investments, providing the other half to the project.

Outraged by the revelations, McCain submitted legislation that would have stripped $150 million from the Big Dig and banned the practice of allowing an insurer to invest and profit from excessive premiums paid with government money.

"Any refunds of insurance premiums or reserve amounts, including interest, that exceed a project's liabilities shall be immediately returned to the federal government," McCain's legislation declared.

But Kerry and Kennedy intervened, and McCain withdrew the legislation in 2000 in favor of the hearing.

At that hearing, the Transportation's Department inspector general made a renewed plea for a permanent federal policy banning the overpayment of insurance premiums and subsequent investment for profit -- what McCain had proposed and Kerry helped kill.

"The policy is needed to ensure that projects do not attempt to draw down federal funds for investment purposes under the guise that they are needed to pay insurance claims. It is that simple," the inspector general told senators.

In September 2001, Kerry disclosed to the Senate ethics office that AIG had paid an estimated $540 in travel expenses to cover his costs for a speech in Burlington, Vt.

A few months later in December 2001, several AIG executives gave maximum $1,000 donations to Kerry's Senate campaign on the same day. The donations totaled $9,700 and were followed by several thousand dollars more over the next two years.

The next spring, AIG donated $10,000 to a new tax-exempt group Kerry formed, the Citizen Soldier Fund, to lay groundwork for his presidential campaign. Later in 2002, AIG gave two more donations of $10,000 each to the same group, making it one of the largest corporate donors to Kerry's group.

The insurer wasn't the only company connected to the Big Dig to donate to Kerry's new group. Two construction companies on the project -- Modern Continental Group and Jay Cashman Construction -- each donated $25,000, IRS records show.

Rep. James McGovern, D-Mass., a Boston area lawmaker, credited Kerry for getting McCain's legislation blocked in favor of a hearing, saying Massachusetts lawmakers "were on the side of good government here but also concerned the language might go too far and put more of a burden on a Massachusetts project."

Push Emails

Thu Jan 29, 2004 at 03:05:12 AM PDT

I just got push polled by some group selling Dean. It was an email calling a vote for Kerry a vote for Bush. I'm pretty sure where I stand on push polling. As a voter its a turn off. And as a Dean supporter its a turn off. Its not going to change my vote, but its a turn off.  What's to do? Keep score of who push polls you less?

Having said that, as a hardcore Dean supporter I do wonder if this is at least a sign of tigher tactics and that they realize where to hit Kerry-convince the electorate that Dean is actually the electable one. (I think they are both very electable, but clearly the party voters are agonzing over who is most electable. If Dean gets to NY/CA its going to be interesting). But I guess this is their cheaper way of campaigning since they are, to my mind inexplicably, sitting out TV for 2/3 apparently.

Insanity and colmes: A Fox Preview of Nominee Kerry

Wed Jan 28, 2004 at 11:33:18 PM PDT

Just turned off Insanity and colmes. With their guest Anal Culter. Well here is what they are going to do to Kerry:

"Kerry is a gigolo and a cad." Thats the direct quote. The paraphrasing is that he relies on his wife's money.

Insanity chimed in that he's no political advisor but he sees the ads right now: Kennedy and Kerry pictured together shaking hands, voiceover voices: "John Kerry, votes to the Left of Ted Kennedy."

The smear will be clear no matter who we nominate. they're just starting to practice.

So I flipped channels. MSNBC was doing the Neel/Trippi story and calling it chaos.

CNN was replaying the "scream" split-screened with Golem/Smigel.

so, i tuned to Curb Your Enthusiasm. How apropos.

How in the world are we going to fight this?
