RI "Restoration of Voting Rights" passed
Wed Nov 08, 2006 at 09:02:22 AM PDT
Rhode Island "Restoration of Voting Rights" for released felons has passed (51.5%).
Reads : Approval of the amendment to the Rhode Island Constitution will provide that no person who is incarcerated in a correctional facility upon a felony conviction shall be permitted to vote until such person is discharged from the facility, at which point that person's right to vote shall be restored.
I think this is another important issue that should make the ballot in more states. Not only is it morally correct to re-enfranchise released felons, but also I've heard statistics that those given their voting rights back are less likely to end up back in jail (anyone got those stats?).

Seattle Times LTEs drinking KoolAid
Mon Mar 13, 2006 at 11:57:11 PM PDT
This LTE in the Seattle Times today was so unbelievably hysterical I had to copy it. I kept reading for the punchline. I thought this guy was auditioning to write for the Daily Show. It's that good. Here's the start:
Goodbye Dubai
Port foes' chance to mitigate terror misses the boat
Editor, The Times:
I am saddened at the collapse of the Dubai port deal ["Dubai port deal off; Arab firm will sell its U.S. operations," Times page one, March 10]. This was the first time that President Bush's strategy in the war on terror has been rebuffed.
It gets much better.
WA state Rep Sen has independent thought, changes mind, appears tolerant
Tue Jan 10, 2006 at 06:16:00 PM PDT
Hard to believe, but Republican legislators can change their minds and buck their caucus at the same time. Also hard to believe is that Washington state anti-discrimination law doesn't include protections based on sexual orientation. Soon, however, the state may join the ranks of the fairer-minded in this regard. The bill has been kicked around the state house for 30 years and nearly passed last session but for the defection of 2 Democratic state senators to the unified Republican side.
Finkbeiner's U-turn boosts gay rights bid
Bill Finkbeiner, Republican Senator from Kirkland, WA, stated his change in position today. I wonder what changed his mind?
Disgusting Opinion Piece in Seattle PI
Wed Sep 14, 2005 at 08:46:00 PM PDT
Here's one to get you fuming. It really made my skin crawl. From today's Seattle PI Kirkland, WA lawyer Julia Youngs writes about Hurricane Katrina:
"That said, it is important to remember that fewer than 400 have been reported dead. This event ranks around 25th in U.S. history for fatalities caused by a natural disaster. Predictably, however, the ubiquitous and overblown media reports are shamelessly manipulating our perception of this tragedy -- presumably so that we all buy tickets for the train of manufactured outrage."
Fucking twit, they're still finding the bodies!

Why You Envy My State Senator w/Poll
Tue May 17, 2005 at 08:48:23 PM PDT
I just got a reply in my email box from my State Senator (Adam Kline (D), 37th LD, Washington state) regarding the loss of the anti-discrimination bill, HB1515 (to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation). (The very same bill of which Microsoft backed off in its support, then reaffirmed its support).
Like you, I am greatly saddened that we failed to pass HB
1515. I'm also appalled at some of the embarrassing statements made by
my colleagues against the bill. I was almost certain that we didn't
have the votes, that we were bringing this to the floor to make a
statement. But I did expect my Republican colleagues to confine their
opposition to more-or-less mainstream stupidity, not to reach back to
old stereotypes and their barely-disguised disgust.
Wow, great start!! I'm lucky to get fabulous representation with Kline in Washington state and Jim McDermott in DC.
Think it isn't easy being Green? Try Terrapass

Don't have the time to brew your own biodiesel? Don't have the money to buy a hybrid? Do you sincerely need and love your SUV? Do you like to be able to accelerate at a reasonable rate onto the freeway?
Do you feel guilty about driving while thinking of the 22lbs of CO2 per gallon of gasoline you're contributing to the atmosphere?
I know that I do. There is a way to alleviate your guilt by doing good, and at a reasonable cost.
Barbara Mikulski rocks SocSec Meeting in Seattle
Thu Mar 31, 2005 at 06:47:56 PM PDT
I knew nothing about Barbara Mikulski before today but she's now My New Favorite Senator.
I went to a Social Security Town Hall in Seattle today. When the speakers finally took the stage nearly an hour late, I recognized Senators Murray, Cantwell and Landrieu.
Hey Seattle PI, please don't say "death tax"
Tue Mar 29, 2005 at 08:21:53 AM PDT
This is an important issue to me. There are rumblings about re-instating the Estate Tax at the federal level. William Gates Sr and other very wealthy people, George Soros among them, are officially against the permanent repeal of the estate tax for financial reasons (huge deficits) as well as moral principles (helping the commonwealth). Washington state Governor Christine Gregoire is proposing tax hikes - in part by re-instating the estate tax (re-instating as opposed to raising??) - to cover a giant state deficit.
Hey Brother, When's the Next Terror Alert? [Poll]
Wed Dec 15, 2004 at 08:51:36 PM PDT
Before the election, terror alerts were coming fast and furious from the Department of Homeland Security. Some even hypothesized that the Administration was cynically manipulating the system for political gain.
So when's the next alert, now that the election is over? Better question, what event will prompt the Administration to "raise awareness"? Has the system been exhausted by overuse? If things get too touchy in Ohio, will they ratchet up the meter?
Betray your cynicism: take the poll.
I'm calling the WA Governor's Race
Fri Nov 05, 2004 at 11:39:47 PM PDT
My wife is an Excel wizard. I got her to make a spreadsheet to predict the winner of the Washington state governor's race. As it stands now, Christine Gregoire leads Dino Rossi by 4,001 votes out of 2.4 million cast.
Taking the estimates of ballots outstanding per each county, we assume that the ballots will come in at the same ratio as the already counted ballots. (Got to start somewhere).
Based on that, the final results are...here:
Action item : state voter initiatives on electoral reform
Thu Nov 04, 2004 at 07:13:35 PM PDT
What burns me the most about the election is the fairness (or unfairness) of it. If I had full (or a higher degree of) confidence in the results, I could rest easier. But I don't. That's the problem.
That's why I'm thinking that voter initiatives may be the way to go for real electoral reform. For me, this is an issue of paramount importance, as each of the past two presidential (and who knows how many other) elections may well have ended differently were the voting systems fairer.
My Dad and John Kerry
Sun Oct 31, 2004 at 09:23:51 PM PDT
Pre-election reflection.
My dad and I made a bet sometime in the middle of 2003. I was a Dean supporter and my dad was for Kerry. We made a pact that we would support the eventual nominee. At the time, Dean was on the rise but he was still considered a long shot. I think my dad feared I might do something rash like vote for a third party candidate should Dean not win. For me, that was not an issue: we both would support the Democratic nominee because we both agreed that Bush was terrible.
So when it became obvious that Kerry would win the nomination, I asked my dad to tell me a little more about Kerry. They were classmates at Yale and have remained friends, so he has some special insight. Historically, we don't talk much about anything. We're two, typical non-communicative males. So this information was new to me.
Red Sox - Yankees [w/poll]
Tue Oct 19, 2004 at 11:15:33 PM PDT
Holy crap! The Red Sox, down 3 games to none after Saturday's 19-8 pasting by the Yankees, make history by winning 3 straight to force a Game 7. In 25 previous best-of-seven series, no team had come back from a 3 game deficit to tie it up let alone win the series. In fact, 20 of those series ended in a 4 game sweep.
Rebecca Romijn Moveon Ad: Brilliant!

Wow, am I glad to have her on our side! They can take Ron Silver any day of the week.
Director'S NOTE:
"I decided to make Stranded Republican in the hope that I might be able to sway undecided voters in the swing states. The ad points out that Bush is neither a Republican or a Democrat, and that this administration is in fact un-American in their policies. In today's climate of character assassination advertising, I felt it would be effective to try an approach using honey instead of vinegar. Growing up in the Midwest I understand that the people are real and need to be reasoned with, rather than being made to feel abject fear. Everyone must realize that this is the most important election of any of our lifetimes, and I pray that the efforts of all of these talented musicians and filmmakers can actually make a difference".

Is George Bush A Cowboy?
Wed Sep 29, 2004 at 09:11:01 PM PDT
Answer: No. That would be an insult to Cowboys. The Cowboy is a gentleman, not a punk.
Gene Autry was a cowboy. He enumerated the Cowboy Code. How many of these rules has W broken?

Did Sam Seaborn win the CA-47th?
Tue Sep 21, 2004 at 07:33:03 PM PDT
I had a conversation today regarding whether Sam Seaborn had won the CA-47th on the West Wing.
I'm only a casual observer and had assumed that of course Sam would win in Orange County, this is the West Wing for chrissakes.
What really happened? Come on, you West Wing-ers. Poll below.
